Modern Foreign Languages
Modern Foreign Languages Department Curriculum Intent
The ambition of the MFL curriculum is to support the school vision of enabling every child to achieve more than they think they are capable of achieving. This is at the heart of everything we do as a school and is the reason why the MFL department is committed to ensuring almost all pupils study a foreign language to GCSE level.
The intent of the MFL curriculum at Sacred Heart is:
- to expose all pupils to different cultures in the Francophone and Hispanic world, thus developing pupils’ understanding of and respect for other cultures
- to encourage pupils to reflect on British culture and British values and to empathise with and appreciate other cultural, social, moral and historical contexts
- to enable pupils to develop their literacy and oracy skills by speaking and writing with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions
- to develop pupils’ cultural capital by encouraging pupils to discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing, literature, films and music and foster a love of language learning by providing them with the opportunity to take part in a trip abroad, or correspondence project with a school abroad
These skills and experiences are important because learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. It fosters pupils’ curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world as a global citizen. They are enabled to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. Language learning provides them with opportunities to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and appreciate great literature/films in their original language. It also lays the foundation for learning further languages, thus equipping them to study and work in other countries.
