Drama Department Curriculum Intent

This year the overriding objective of the Drama curriculum is to support the school vision of enabling every child to achieve more than they think they are capable of achieving – not just academically but through creative expression and cultural capital.

The intent of our curriculum is

  • To enrich the cultural, emotional and artistic understanding of our pupils by exposing them to a diverse range of performance styles, play texts, practitioners and cultural theatrical traditions which enable them to encounter and empathise with cultural, social, moral and historical contexts they may never otherwise come face to face with
  • To enable pupils to develop a thirst and passion for all aspects of Drama and the Theatrical arts such as performance, design, directing, scriptwriting and backstage disciplines
  • To encourage pupils to develop a love of theatre and live performance for pleasure as well as education
  • Our over-reaching aim is to give pupils the cultural capital and power to confidently express themselves with confidence and clarity in a range of situations both in and out of their comfort zone.

Our Drama curriculum aims to meet the needs of all pupils, providing each of them with a range of opportunities to learn and achieve.

We seek to ensure that all pupils receive a far reaching and diverse Drama curriculum allowing them to build character and develop socially, morally and academically in preparation for their futures. The subject by nature explores a wide breadth of cultural diversity and values within Britain as well as exposing students to local, national and international issues which could impact the world of tomorrow.

We provide an extensive and diverse extra-curricular program at Sacred Heart, benefiting from free ticket schemes for the Old Vic, Young Vic, Southwark Playhouse, Blue Elephant and Theatre Peckham, as well as discounted tickets for the National Theatre and Shakespeare’s Globe. We also take part in workshops and performance opportunities in association with Theatre Peckham, Frantic Assembly, The National Youth Theatre, STEP Festival, Mountview Theatre Arts and the Young Vic, with many of our students going on to work for or perform professionally with these theatres and companies. In school, we run a number of clubs and performance opportunities throughout the year.
